Kicking off the first post with a ’90s classic. Released in 1992, Split Second is not quite the typical cyberpunk film, but it does have a lot of the aesthetics and attitude you typically find in the genre, with a healthy mix of sci-fi and horror. Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Blind Fury) stars as a cop surviving on “anxiety, coffee, and chocolate”, who’s hunting down a demonic serial killer creature that killed his partner years ago. Kim Cattrall (Big Trouble in Little China) also stars alongside as the wife of his ex-partner. The setting of the film takes place in a futuristic, dystopian London, where the streets are flooded with water due to the effects of global warming.
I’m not a big fan of horror, but what I like most about the film is that it has the foundation of a buddy cop movie, with elements of sci-fi and some comedy. Even though the movie is somewhat low-budget, it carries natural charm through Hauer and offers cool visuals and themes. Overall, it’s a great movie if you can find it.
